This summer has been a busy and rewarding time for the volunteers of Street Medics Austin (SMA). We’ve seen a significant increase in deployments, fulfilling our mission to provide emergency medical support to the community during times of civil unrest. Between May and August, we had the opportunity to attend 13 deployments and host one training event, and it was all made possible by the dedication of our volunteers.
We’re excited to announce that we are now an officially recognized nonprofit organization in the State of Texas! We have put together our first Board of Directors and we are now working towards becoming an officially tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. Our goal is to continue growing SMA to better serve the community and our volunteers.
We have also set up a nonprofit business bank account and are working on finding a fundraising platform to accept monetary donations. These donations will go towards expanding our training resources, increasing our capacity for community engagement, building our gear inventory, and ensuring we can continue providing consumable goods at deployments.
In mid-to-late September, we will host an informal gathering for volunteers to learn more about the future of the organization and ask any questions. For those who are interested in volunteering, we have opportunities for on-the-ground medics, non-medical volunteers, deployment leads, supply runners, and even remote support positions. This is a great time to get involved!
Finally, we’re seeking another officer to join the Board as our Treasurer. The responsibilities include directing and preparing financial records, managing donations, financial planning and analysis, and assisting the Board and CEO with controlling the organization’s financial needs.
